National Regeneration Convention
People, Power and Poverty: the role of communities in shaping places
The National Regeneration Convention is the UK wide event aimed specifically at people involved in local regeneration - particularly those working in partnerships. Speakers, workshop facilitators and delegates all bring with them an abundance of challenging experiences to be shared over the course of three days.
This year, the eighth Convention will be in Loughborough University, starting on the afternoon of Wednesday 25 July 2007 and ending on the afternoon of Friday 27July 2007. As usual, we welcome community representatives, politicians, policy makers and activists to take part. Last year’s Convention attracted more than 600 people and it has now established itself as the most successful regeneration event in bringing together a stimulating mix of people from a wide range of backgrounds and work experience from all over the UK.
The Programme
The practice of regeneration and neighbourhood renewal has developed enormously in the UK over the last few years and the Convention reflects this. Under the main title of, People, power and poverty: the role of communities in shaping places, the Convention highlights four strong themes – place, power, deprivation and cohesion.
The Government’s emphasis on place and partnership working offers new opportunities for change and dialogue; power, and its devolution to communities, is ongoing vital work; eliminating deprivation and its impact on communities will change people’s lives; and cohesion, especially in relation to how issues of race and ethnicity play out at neighbourhood level, is one of the most important issues today.
Each theme will have a session devoted to it which will include a plenary and ten related workshops and master classes. As well as themed sessions, the Convention will offer an Open Space event this year, allowing delegates to network around topics of their own choice in addition to those offered in the formal programme.
The Convention will showcase effective practice, and care is being taken to ensure that presentations and workshops draw on experience from the different countries - with a number of workshops specifically offering cross-border comparisons. The unique aspect of the National Regeneration Convention remains unchanged: an event to exchange ideas and experience between people directly involved in renewal and regeneration and to learn from them. The programme will be regularly updated at www.room.org.uk
