Gate to Southwell Folk Festival
Southwell Folk Festival 2007
Southwell is holding its first ever folk festival from Friday 8 June to Sunday 10th. The festival will coincide with the Town Festival and the annual Gate to Southwell procession of Morris dancers to Southwell Minster from Nottingham city centre. The three day folk festival will be held on an 8.5 acre site next to the town’s workhouse.
Performers include Kathryn Tickell, Vin Garbutt, Waterson Carthy, John Tams and Barry Coope, The New Rope String Band, The Doonans, Kerr and Fagan, Winter Wilson and Vicky Clayton
In addition to performers in the main marquee, there will be top local artistes and open mike sessions in a second marquee, a dance display area, children’s and youths’ events, singarounds, and opportunities to meet the artists. Camping facilities are available for weekend ticket holders.
A craft fair, food stalls and various other shops will be on site and there will be entertainment for children. The first day of the festival will include a children’s education day followed by performances and a ceilidh in the evening. Traditional music and dance teaching will take place in schools in the area in the run-up to the event, conducted by several of the leading performers.
There will also be workshops, performances and sessions throughout the town, and the Workhouse, a National Trust Property, will be used for some of these.
