Women Of Steel

A chance to see this successful and locally inspired play again

Following the runaway success of the original production staged in and around the Steel Heritage Centre at East Carlton Park last summer Women Of Steel is back This innovative piece of theatre had so many people asking for more when last summers tickets sold out that Corby Womens Theatre Group felt compelled to offer the play to a wider audience.

Women of Steel was written to commemorate the closure of the Steel works in Corby in 1980. Through the eyes of women the play looks at the first influx of new communities in the 30s and takes us through the heyday of Steel production the battle to Save Steel the Wonderworld of the 80sand the depression of the middle years and concludes with the promise of regeneration as seen through the eyes of young people from Shout Youth Theatre.

If you originate from Corby the stories will resonate powerfully as you may catch glimpses of your own family history in the characters. People from elsewhere will gain a deep insight into the hearts and minds of Corby people as the characters are derived from real peoples experiences.

On Thursday 8th and Friday 9th March Women Of Steel will be staged in The Arc Theatre a distinctive purpose built community space for sports and arts which is joined to Rockingham Road Primary School. This readaptation for The Arc includes extra scripted parts an expanded multimedia element as there were some deleted scenes that couldnt fit into the promenade theatre format at East Carlton Park interesting new interplay with acting set and guest performances from Steel workers who walked to London with the Save Steel petition. The elements of physical theatre are still integral to the piece and there may even be some vocal audience participation during the strike

The whole project is being produced by Corby people writer and director Paula Boulton says In writing the play I wanted to look at where we are 25 years since closure honour the struggle to Save Steel and acknowledge the fact that hard working people have come to Corby from all over the world for 70 years. Sharing our rich history with the new Corby people will show them they can be proud of the town they have chosen to live in and join us in looking to a great future.

The play was funded by Awards For All as part of a wider 10000 project Stories of Steel which includes a theatre adaptation of Women of Steel and a follow on series of multimedia archive materials.
