Creative Industries Consultation Day
Creative Industries in Peak District and Derbyshire
Thursday 3rd April 2008, 10am - 4pm, Cliff College, Calver, Hope Valley S32 3XG
An event to celebrate and showcase the strength and potential of creativity and creative industries in the Peak District and Derbyshire and look towards the future development needs of the creative industries in this area. If you are an artist, Creative Industry or involved in economic development and policy development in The Peak District, Derbyshire and/or Derby City, you are warmly invited to this event.
The Creative Industries are becoming increasingly important in their contribution to the overall economy of the nation. The sector grew by an average of 5% per annum between 1997 and 2004. This compares to an average of 3% for the whole of the economy over this period. In the summer quarter of 2005, creative employment totalled 1.8 million jobs. Total creative employment increased from 1.6m in 1997 to 1.8m in 2005, an average growth rate of 2% per annum, compared to 1% for the whole of the economy over this period.
Notwithstanding the importance and growth of the creative industries, their profile is very low in the Peak District and Derbyshire. This event is an opportunity for creative industries and local authorities to take stock and contribute thoughts and ideas into the consultation process for a Creative Industries strategy for the area.
We have three priorities for the day:
- to provide an update on national policies regarding the Creative Industries and report on the Burns Owen Partnership research into the Creative Rural Economy in the East Midlands conducted by the last year
- to provide an opportunity for creative individuals and businesses to network and contribute their thoughts into the consultation for a Creative Industries Strategy for Derbyshire and Derby City
- to engage with relevant local authority officers on their plans and strategies for creative industries and link this into the consultation for a Creative Industries Strategy for Derbyshire and Derby City Programme for the Day
