Big Lottery green grants

The Big Lottery Fund announced £5 million worth of green grants on 12 November. These are available across the UK for the BBC-led Breathing Places campaign, which features on the Autumnwatch programmes on BBC2. A breathing place is a green space that benefits wildlife and the local community. It may be local woodland, roadsides, parks, local nature reserves or wildlife areas, ponds, green corridors and wildflower meadows and could obviously include spaces around museums.

More information is available at www.bbc.co.uk/breathingplaces and www.biglotteryfund.org.uk

Esmee Fairburn new approach

The Foundation will be taking a new approach to grant-making from January 2008. This will be an open, less prescriptive way of working, listening to applicant’s ideas and funding a wider range of work than before. More information and full guidelines will be available on the website (www.esmeefairbairn.org.uk) from 3 January.

Conditional Exemption Scheme

This is the scheme under which owners of artefacts obtain tax exemption on their heritage assets. Through this scheme, museum and art gallery curators can take advantage of many important heritage objects which are not normally on display to the public as in order to gain exemption the object must:

Those items available for loan are publicised via the Visit UK Heritage website: www.visitukheritage.gov.uk. The website also holds more information about the conditional exemption scheme.

Creative apprenticeship opportunities

Museums are being offered the opportunity to act as the lead employer in their region to champion museum involvement in creative apprenticeships. The Creative & Cultural Skills Creative Apprenticeship Programme, part-funded by the MLA Partnership, will enable people to choose from a number of work based, nationally accredited apprenticeships, including one in Cultural & Heritage Venue Operations.

As a lead employer a museum will be expected to recruit an apprentice; work with Creative and Cultural Skills to ensure the apprenticeship programme is a success; work closely with colleges and training providers within the regions; keep other museums within their region informed and attend regional events to promote the Creative Apprenticeship.
